This work explores a personal story that is experienced by many. “A Grandmother’s Son, portraits of unfortunate assumptions” stems from my assumptions of my uncle that I had growing up, therefore making our relationship difficult. After he passed away, I learned more about him and wished I had moved pass my assumptions and gotten to know him more. For this work, I looked out for men who reminded me of my uncle, in either appearance or the good qualities that I had missed. I then painted their ‘resting face’ or the face between expressions. The resting face is one of the beginnings of what we gather many of our assumptions of a person from. I have also included mixed media pieces that reveal my subject’s actual assumptions they have heard from people. Can we remove this layer and go beyond what we think? Can we shed our own assumptions that we have heard from others about ourselves?
